Day 1 (July 23)

Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender

We're kicking things off on the very first day with "Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender." The film is set after the cult series "Avatar: The Last Airbender." It once again centers on familiar characters like Aang, Katara, Sokka, Zuko, and Toph.

Here's what it's about: Avatar Aang, the world's last Airbender, learns of an ancient power that could save his culture from extinction. With the help of his friends, he embarks on a global quest to find it before it falls into the wrong hands and upends the peace they sacrificed everything to achieve.

Instead, the production moved to Paramount+, where the film will premiere just two days after the panel (July 25).

Stuart Fails to Save the Universe

Naturally, one particular franchise couldn't miss Comic-Con. One of the world's biggest pop culture conventions centered around classic "nerd culture" is the perfect stage for "The Big Bang Theory." The cult series is getting a spin-off soon: "Stuart Fails to Save the Universe" centers on Stuart (Kevin Sussman), a character familiar from the original series. But other familiar faces from "The Big Bang Theory" will also make an appearance. The panel takes place on Thursday, July 23. On the same day, the series will premiere on HBO Max. The Walking Dead: Dead City Season 3

"The Walking Dead" has long been a Comic-Con institution. While the flagship series has concluded, its spin-offs continue to keep the zombie universe alive. In 2026, a panel on "The Walking Dead: Dead City" awaits us. The spin-off centered on Maggie (Lauren Cohan) and former antagonist Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) is heading into its third season. They've also kept the panel guests under wraps, promising surprise guests. Many fans are expecting one thing above all else: the big trailer for "Avengers: Doomsday." So far, Marvel has only released a few teasers; there hasn't been a full trailer yet.

The timing (the movie hits theaters on December 18) and the setting would be perfect for a trailer release. After all, Marvel likes to use the Comic-Con stage for major announcements. As a reminder: Robert Downey Jr.'s return to the MCU as Doctor Doom was revealed at Comic-Con 2024. So we can look forward to seeing what news Marvel has to announce this time—whether it's about "Avengers: Doomsday," the sequel "Avengers: Secret Wars," or other Marvel projects.

After years of uncertainty, the planned live-action adaptation of "Naruto" is finally taking shape. Lionsgate has now officially confirmed via X that the casting process for the three main characters has begun. They are looking for actors to play the iconic members of Team 7: Naruto Uzumaki, Sasuke Uchiha, and Sakura Haruno.

Once these three lead roles are cast, additional supporting characters will follow. This marks a decisive step toward production for the Hollywood project. Destin Daniel Cretton will be in charge of the film's production. In "Mare of Easttown," Kate Winslet plays the protagonist Marianne "Mare" Sheehan, a police officer investigating a murder case while struggling with personal issues. The creator and screenwriter set both the plot of "Task" and that of "Mare of Easttown" in working-class suburbs of Philadelphia. Additionally, the series air on the same network: HBO. Consequently, a crossover seems like a natural fit, especially since both series center on troubled investigators. Many fans would surely be thrilled if, at some point, Mare Sheehan and Tom Brandis – and thus the A-list Hollywood stars Kate Winslet and Mark Ruffalo – were to cross paths. He received support from Michael Panes, who previously worked on "Godfather of Harlem". Panes has already read the finished draft and described it as "very good".

Here's what it's about

Moana (Catherine Laga'aia) grows up on the island of Motunui, where she spends a happy childhood. As a teenager, however, she senses that this can't be all there is – that her destiny lies beyond her homeland. When resources on Motunui mysteriously begin to run low, Moana makes a decision: she'll follow the call of the ocean and venture out onto the open sea. She knows what she must do to save her people, thanks to her loving and wise grandmother (Rena Owen): she must find the shape-shifting demigod Maui (Dwayne Johnson). In fact, she succeeds in doing so soon enough – but that's only the beginning of her adventure.

With "Moana," Disney brings the next live-action adaptation of an animated musical to the big screen. The guiding principle in most cases is that the songs, story, look, and feel should essentially stay true to the original – which is particularly evident in "Moana." Despite their closeness to the animated originals, however, Disney's live-action adaptations always run the risk of losing some of their charm and wit. Ultimately, the magic – which simply can't be easily transferred one-to-one – tends to get lost. Given the film's strong resemblance to the beloved original, the question of what exactly adds value to the "Moana" remake is one that particularly troubles many critics in their reviews – and is a major factor in the film receiving generally mediocre ratings overall. Jake Coyle of The Associated Press, for example, writes:

"The new 'Moana' is an often shot-for-shot, note-for-note remake of the original, with small pockets of new material. […] But all inventiveness has gone out to sea."

Green goddesses and giant volcanic monsters

What we'll give "Moana" credit for: The filmmakers led by director Thomas Kail make good use of the maritime setting, which holds its own in the live-action adaptation – even if the CGI elements don't always blend in perfectly. Above all, the island setting at the beginning of the film is a delight to watch, and the fantastical creatures Moana encounters during her odyssey – green goddesses and giant volcanic monsters rising from the ocean – are magnificently staged. But opinions are divided when it comes to the film's visual style as well. The mix of live-action scenes and CGI has drawn some criticism. Nell Minow of RogerEbert.com, on the other hand, is particularly impressed:

"[Cinematographer Oscar Faura] uses the camera effectively to show us the vastness of the ocean and to sense how it makes Moana feel. The production design by John Myhre is wonderfully inviting, each space distinctive down to the smallest detail."

Catherine Laga'aia and Dwayne Johnson take center stage

We also think the chemistry between the two lead actors, Catherine Laga'aia and Dwayne Johnson, is spot-on. Johnson previously voiced Maui in the original animated film and plays a key role in ensuring that the quick-witted demigod works reasonably well in the live-action version as well – unlike other famous Disney reincarnations, such as the Genie from Guy Ritchie's "Aladdin" adaptation. Laga'aia's performance, in particular, has been praised by critics – even by those who are generally critical of the film itself. David Rooney, who is among those favorably disposed toward the "Moana" remake, succinctly expresses his enthusiasm for the two stars' performances in The Hollywood Reporter:

"Johnson and Laga'aia are terrific together as the reluctant buddies, whether facing disaster or adventure […]."

The spark just won't ignite

Overall, however, the film leaves us strangely unmoved. There's no real sense of suspense, no matter how great the dangers Moana and Maui face. This also has to do with the characters, who come across as rather two-dimensional overall – despite Maui's tragic backstory. Especially with the protagonist, Moana, the film does take its time at the beginning to introduce her to the audience before she embarks on her adventurous journey across the ocean. Nevertheless, the filmmakers fail to give the heroine the necessary depth. Not even when she expresses her feelings through songs.

Owen Gleiberman of Variety writes:

"The 'Moana' songs are friendly, with a rapture that sneaks up on you."

We see this aspect somewhat differently. A telling example is the scene in the first third of the film where Moana must say goodbye to her beloved grandmother. The supposed emotional impact of this moment fades completely when Moana immediately launches into one of her many songs – in perfectly produced smash-hit style. Why mourn when you can storm the charts instead? It's precisely at this point that it becomes clear: "Moana" is a glossy, polished product without any rough edges – every note is spot-on, and yet it all sounds harmless.

Conclusion: Overall, the remake isn't having an easy time with many critics. And we, too, can only warm up to the film to a limited extent: "Moana" scores points with its maritime setting and the cast – but it just doesn't quite spark.

Superstar Dwayne Johnson has landed his next leading role! According to the industry magazine Variety, the actor will star in the upcoming action drama "Free Byrd". Greg Kwedar, who has already made a name for himself internationally with the acclaimed film "Sing Sing", will direct and write the screenplay. Behind the scenes, Artists Equity – the production company owned by Ben Affleck and Matt Damon – will be involved.

"Free Byrd" tells the story of a motorcycle stuntman from Las Vegas who, after being diagnosed with dementia, tries to keep his condition a secret from those around him. As he struggles to come to terms with the diagnosis, he faces one last major challenge: a spectacular jump in which he puts everything on the line. Johnson himself expressed enthusiasm for the project. Quote:

Whether as Luke Hobbs, Maui, Black Adam, or Mark Kerr – Johnson knows how to imbue a wide variety of characters with his unmistakable presence.

"The Mandalorian & Grogu" was just released in theaters, but another "Star Wars" movie is already on the horizon. "Star Wars: Starfighter" promises a completely new adventure set in a galaxy far, far away. However, not too many details about the plot have been made public – until now. An alleged leak from the insider MakingStarWars.net is said to reveal extensive information about the plot and the characters.

What does the leak reveal?

As always, it's important to note that these are unconfirmed insider reports, not official information. According to MakingStarWars, Ryan Gosling will play a character named Cade. The character is said to resemble Han Solo in his personality traits. Accordingly, Cade intends to take a boy named Rone or Ronin to a refuge for Jedi (possibly some kind of academy). This place is said to be located on a planet called Adaria. The insider describes the planet as "green and lush" and "East Asian-inspired."

As we already know, the boy will be played by newcomer Flynn Gray. So far, two set photos of Gosling and Gray have been released. The boy's mother is reportedly played by Amy Adams, whose casting was officially confirmed several months ago.

Is an acting comeback on the horizon?

However, another big name hasn't been officially confirmed yet: According to MakingStarWars, Eva Mendes is also said to be part of the cast. She is reportedly playing a "fully glammed out cantina owner named Belle" who is a whopping 650 years old. Insider Daniel Richtman reported on this casting coup a few months ago.

If the reports about Mendes turn out to be true, the Hollywood star is set for a comeback. Mendes had stepped away from acting quite some time ago. The actress is known for numerous films such as "The Place Beyond the Pines," "Training Day," and "Ghost Rider." However, her casting wouldn't be entirely out of left field: Mendes has been in a relationship with Gosling for many years.

The New Villains

According to reports, the new major "Star Wars" antagonist is set to be portrayed by "House of the Dragon" star Matt Smith. Mia Goth is also set to play a villain. MakingStarWars also shared new details about her. According to the report, she's set to engage in a lightsaber duel with another character (played by "Rebel Ridge" star Aaron Pierre) on the aforementioned planet Adaria.

Cast & Crew

In addition to the actors mentioned, two other cast members have been officially confirmed: "The Inbetweeners" actor Simon Bird and "The Gentlemen" actor Daniel Ings.

"Starfighter" will be directed by "Deadpool & Wolverine" director Shawn Levy. The filmmaker is also known for "Free Guy" and the "Night at the Museum" films. In recent years, Levy has been a key figure behind the scenes of one of the most popular series of the past decade: he directed several episodes of "Stranger Things."

The screenplay, meanwhile, is written by Jonathan Tropper, who previously collaborated with Levy on the Netflix film "The Adam Project." With Levy and Tropper reuniting, the film benefits from an established creative partnership behind the scenes.

When is Starfighter set?

"Starfighter" marks the beginning of a new chapter for "Star Wars." The film is set five years after "Episode 9: The Rise of Skywalker." However, the story is independent of the Skywalker saga and follows entirely new characters. Director Shawn Levy announced at Star Wars Celebration 2025:

"It's not a prequel, not a sequel. It's a new adventure. It's set in a period of time that we haven't seen explored yet."

The alleged leak confirms this impression, at least to some extent. However, it remains to be seen which details will actually turn out to be true. In our movie preview, we took a closer look at "Starfighter."

When will Starfighter hit theaters?

However, we'll still need to be patient a bit longer before we can see "Starfighter" on the big screen. The film opens in theaters on May 28, 2027. On the live-action front, the second season of "Ahsoka" is set to premiere in spring 2027. Coming even sooner is the new animated series "Star Wars: Visions Presents – The Ninth Jedi." And in the coming months, "The Mandalorian & Grogu" is also expected to be released on Disney+. Fans of the fantasy animated series "Avatar: The Last Airbender" have something to look forward to. A new adventure will be released soon. The animated film "Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender" premieres on Paramount+ on July 25, 2026. And if it goes really well, it probably won't be the last adventure fans can look forward to. That's what one of the creators of "Avatar" is hinting at.

Bryan Konietzko, who co-created the franchise with Michael Dante DiMartino and is co-responsible for the story for "Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender," spoke with Entertainment Weekly about the film. In the interview, he explains that "the Aang movie was just one of a whole slate" and adds:

"I'm working on another thing, which we'll announce when the time's right."

However, it seems we'll have to wait and see whether the current film proves to be a success. At least, the Entertainment Weekly writer hints that it depends on whether "enough people watch the 'Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender' on Paramount+."

Avatar Aang: What the new movie is about

In terms of plot, the film is set about ten years after the events of the series finale. Accordingly, the heroes have aged as well. A press release from Paramount+ describes the story as follows:

"Avatar Aang, the world's last Airbender, learns of an ancient power that could save his culture from extinction. With the help of his friends, he embarks on a global quest to find it before it falls into the wrong hands and threatens to upend the peace they sacrificed everything to achieve."

To help pass the time until the movie's start, Paramount+ has revealed not only the release date but has also published a first trailer for "Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender." Here, you can get a glimpse of what to expect from this new animated adventure:

Problems caused by a leak of the film

Originally, "Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender" was supposed to hit theaters. Then it was announced that it would premiere on Paramount+ in the fall of 2026. However, the creators were confronted with a problem they hadn't anticipated: the entire film was leaked online ahead of time. When asked about it, co-creator Michael Dante DiMartino told Entertainment Weekly just how devastating that was. "It was a dark day when we found out that that had occurred," he explains, adding:

"We were all pretty disappointed and frustrated and all the emotions. It's just one of those unfortunate things that occur in your careers, in your life. I've been through a lot of them in various ways in my life, so it's always a setback and disappointing."

Not the first restart of Avatar

It's all the more wonderful that the film is now officially being released and, if it's successful, it likely won't be the last. For this latest film, Bryan Konietzko and Michael Dante DiMartino conceived the story together with Tim Hedrick and Kenneth Lin. The screenplay was written by Tim Hedrick and Christopher Yost. Lauren Montgomery directed the film. The film's voice cast includes Eric Nam, Dave Bautista, Jessica Matten, Román Zaragoza, Dionne Quan, and Taika Waititi.

The original animated series, which serves as the basis for the film, aired from 2005 to 2008. During that time, the series spanned three seasons with a total of 61 episodes. It was followed by the animated series "The Legend of Korra", which ran from 2012 to 2014 and comprised four seasons with a total of 52 episodes. In 2010, director and screenwriter M. Night Shyamalan directed the live-action film adaptation "The Last Airbender." What was planned as the first part of a trilogy turned out to be a flop, so the sequels were put on hold. With the current "Avatar" series on Netflix, there is now another live-action version, which so far consists of two seasons and is set to conclude with the upcoming third season.

The nominations for the 78th Primetime Emmy Awards have been announced. "The Pitt" could once again be one of the biggest winners at this year's ceremony. The hospital drama already won five Emmys last year, including Best Drama Series. This time around, the second season of "The Pitt" is in the running with 25 nominations – making it the favorite once again.

At the last ceremony, "Severance" was considered the biggest contender – but the series isn't in the running this time, as its new season hasn't aired yet. With "Pluribus," there's another science fiction series in the mix this year that could pose a serious threat to "The Pitt" like no other show. Industry experts are certain: In 2026, either the second season of "The Pitt" or the first season of "Pluribus" will win the Emmy for Best Drama Series. We're already eager to see who will come out on top in the end.

In addition to these two top contenders, the following series are also nominated in this category: "Paradise," "Slow Horses," "The Diplomat," "The Gilded Age," "Your Friends & Neighbors," and "A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms."

Best Comedy Series: Hacks is the favorite

On the comedy front, there are also some familiar faces. The favorite: "Hacks." The series, which centers on an aging stand-up comedian and her younger writer, was beaten last year by the Hollywood satire "The Studio," which was a newcomer to the race with its first season and went on to sweep the awards. This time, however, "The Studio" is sitting this one out, as – like "Severance" – there isn't a new season yet. That means the coast is clear for the equally acclaimed comedy gem "Hacks," which is in the running one last time with its final, fifth season and has the best chance of bidding farewell with an Emmy for Outstanding Comedy Series. In total, "Hacks" racked up 24 nominations – a record for a comedy series.

All other nominees, on the other hand, are considered to have rather slim chances in the category. But who knows – maybe there will be a surprise here. In any case, "Hacks" will have to compete against the following series at this year's Emmy Awards: "Shrinking," "Abbott Elementary," "Only Murders in the Building," "Nobody Wants This," the newcomers "Widow's Bay" and "Margo's Got Money Troubles," as well as the former awards favorite "The Bear," whose fifth and final season was recently released, but which is represented at this year's Emmys by its fourth season.

Noah Wyle and Jean Smart are considered strong contenders

But "The Pitt" and "Hacks" aren't just considered frontrunners in the "Best Drama Series" and "Best Comedy Series" categories. The stars of these two highly acclaimed productions could also walk away as winners once again. Noah Wyle was already honored as Best Drama Lead Actor in 2025 for his role as the dedicated emergency room doctor Dr. Michael "Robby" Robinavitch. And this time around, too, there's likely no getting around his outstanding performance. The same goes for last year's winner, Jean Smart, who, as the quick-witted comedian Deborah Vance, is once again expected to be named Best Comedy Lead Actress, if current predictions are any indication.

In the "Best Limited/Anthology Series" category, the outcome isn't quite as clear-cut. However, "Beef" is considered a strong contender. The darkly humorous anthology series already won the award in 2024 and is now regarded as a promising candidate with its second season. But the competition is also considered a threat: "Beef" will have to go up against "The Beast in Me," "Love Story: John F. Kennedy Jr. and Carolyn Bessette," "All Her Fault," and "DTF St. Louis."

The nominations were announced by two former Emmy winners, Jeff Hiller ("Somebody Somewhere") and Liza Colón-Zayas ("The Bear"). We'll find out who wins in just a few months: The 78th Primetime Emmy Awards ceremony will take place on September 14, 2026, in Los Angeles. The ceremony will be hosted by Mariska Hargitay, best known as the star of the crime drama series "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit."
