Who will be the new James Bond? The casting of 007 has been a hot topic in the film world since Daniel Craig's departure. Industry magazine Deadline now reports when the casting will officially take place – and what kind of person they are looking for.

They want to stay true to Ian Fleming's original character in one key aspect: the new Bond must be British! In addition, the iconic spy is to be portrayed by a "fresh face". They are reportedly looking for an unknown male actor around the age of 30. According to sources from the industry magazine, the new 007 must also have a certain presence:

"Whoever it is, has to look like he could kill you with his bare hands in a trice. From the moment you see him, that has to be readily apparent."

The described profile rules out a lot of names that have been discussed among "Bond" fans in recent years – most of them are simply too well-known or too old. Fan favorites include, for example, Henry Cavill and Idris Elba. There has also been frequent talk about "Spider-Man" star Tom Holland, and more recently, Aaron Taylor-Johnson.

When Is the James Bond Casting Happening?

According to Deadline magazine, casting for the new Bond is not expected to begin until 2026. Director Denis Villeneuve is currently still busy with the production of "Dune 3". Once that is completed, he will shift his attention to "James Bond". Filming is due to take place in 2027, with a theatrical release anticipated in 2028.

Daniel Craig: The Last James Bond to Date

This would mark seven years since the departure of Daniel Craig, who shaped the last 007 era. With him as James Bond, the traditional franchise underwent its most profound transformation since Sean Connery's debut in the 60s. Craig's Bond was raw, vulnerable, determined – and often torn. Between 2006 and 2021, five films were made that were not only huge successes, but also reinvented the character of the British agent for a new generation.

Casino Royale

With "Casino Royale", the franchise made a radical new start: new continuity, new style – and a new Bond. Daniel Craig, initially criticized by some fans as miscast, delivered an impressive performance. His 007 was physically present, brutal and emotionally complex. The film tells the story of Bond's origins: his first mission and his first great love. Instead of over-the-top action, the movie focuses on suspense, character development and psychology. The legendary poker game showdown with Le Chiffre (Mads Mikkelsen) takes the place of the usual high-tech gadget thunderstorm. Today, "Casino Royale" is recognized by many fans as one of the best "Bond" films.

Quantum of Solace

"Quantum of Solace" begins where "Casino Royale" ends. Bond is emotionally troubled and driven by revenge. The movie is significantly shorter, more breathless and more action-packed. The plot revolves around the mysterious organization "Quantum", which exploits global political instability. Craig's intense performance characterizes the film more than the story: this Bond is cold, efficient and unstoppable. But overall, fan feedback on "Quantum of Solace" was mixed. Especially in comparison to "Casino Royale", the film was a disappointment for some fans.

Skyfall

With "Skyfall", Sam Mendes directed a visually intoxicating, emotional thriller that repositions Bond. In general, "Skyfall" is considered one of the most visually impressive "Bond" entries. Legendary cinematographer Roger Deakins certainly has his part to play in this. The story: A cyber attack hits MI6 and Bond's loyalty to M (Judi Dench) is put to the test. The charismatic villain Silva (Javier Bardem) is no ordinary adversary, but a mirror image of Bond. "Skyfall" marked the 50th anniversary of the spy series and is still remembered fondly by many fans today.

Spectre

"Spectre" attempts to bring together the threads of all the previous films – including the introduction of the iconic villain Blofeld (Christoph Waltz). Bond is on the trail of a global surveillance organization that reaches deep into MI6. The film is ambitious, but not quite as convincing as its predecessor. "Spectre" shows Craig as an agent who no longer simply functions, but begins to question. Overall, however, the film has received mixed reviews.

No Time To Die

Bond has retired, but a new biological superweapon forces him back into service. The movie is emotionally charged, with great moments but also quiet scenes. It brings Craig's Bond to a conclusion that many could not have imagined.

The era of Daniel Craig

Overall, Daniel Craig's Bond was above all different from previous incarnations. Whether he was the "best Bond" is, of course, a matter of taste. Many fans still see Sean Connery as the ultimate embodiment of the iconic agent. We are now looking forward to the new Bond actor and hope that the next 007 will also receive his highlight films – similar to Daniel Craig with "Casino Royale" or "Skyfall".
