Scream 8 Without Kevin Williamson? Scream 7 Director Talks About the Sequel
Could Production on Part 8 Kick Off Soon?
"Scream 8" is becoming increasingly likely – but will the franchise have to find a new director for the sequel? In an interview with the portal Hello Sidney, "Scream 7" director Kevin Williamson was asked whether he wants to direct the next film. His answer:
"Not Scream, no. [...] For the next 'Scream', I'll probably step back and just be a part of the family again."
Instead, Williamson currently has other plans: he is busy developing a movie as well as a few tv shows. Nevertheless, the director has some ideas for the eighth film. However, he could not yet say exactly what the sequel would be about.
"I have some ideas of where it could go, but I'm anxious to see what another storyteller could do with it. [...] It's nice to be part of the 'Scream' family. That doesn't mean I always have to be front and center. I don't always have to write or direct. Other people can take the reins."
Franchise icon Neve Campbell has also already expressed her initial ideas to Williamson. The actress playing Sidney Prescott thus seems to be at least interested in another film. Campbell was not on board for the first time in "Scream 6". She has now celebrated her comeback in "Scream 7".
Is Scream 8 coming?
Williamson also emphasized his hope and optimism regarding part 8. The film has not yet been confirmed, but the box office results are encouraging. Variety reports that filming could possibly even start as early as fall 2026.
All signs currently point to another "Scream" film – just without Williamson as the director. The fact that "Scream 7" has received rather mixed reactions from fans doesn't seem to change anything. The film can currently still be seen in cinemas. You can watch the latest trailer here.

Kevin Williamson and the Scream series
Williamson is one of the most influential figures in the "Scream" franchise. He wrote the screenplay for director Wes Craven's first film, which redefined modern slasher cinema with its self-reflexive style. Williamson subsequently also wrote the scripts for "Scream 2" and "Scream 4". With "Scream 7", he directed a film in the franchise for the first time, taking on an even more central role.
In addition to "Scream", Kevin Williamson has also left his mark on numerous other successful films and series. For example, he wrote the screenplay for the teen horror film "I Know What You Did Last Summer". He developed the cult youth series "Dawson's Creek" in the 90s. He later co-developed the supernatural hit series "The Vampire Diaries" and worked as a producer and writer on several other TV projects. He also wrote the script for the horror film "The Faculty". With his numerous projects, Williamson has been an influential voice in modern teen and genre entertainment since the 90s.
The success of the Scream series
The "Scream" series is considered one of the most influential horror franchises in modern film history. It all began with "Scream" in 1996, which revitalized the slasher genre with a self-deprecating, meta-humorous approach. The films deliberately play with the rules of classic horror films and even allow their characters to discuss them openly. This mixture of suspense, humor and genre commentary became a trademark of the series and made the masked killer Ghostface one of the most well-known horror characters in pop culture.
Over several decades, the story continued with the sequels "Scream 2", "Scream 3", "Scream 4" and the successful return of the franchise with "Scream 5" and "Scream 6". In 2015, a "Scream" series was released with a total of three seasons. The movies remain true to their concept of incorporating current trends in the horror genre and pop culture into its plot while introducing new generations of characters. To this day, "Scream" is considered a formative and long-lasting franchise in horror cinema.
