The "God of War" series continues to make progress: Now that the Amazon adaptation has already found the actors for Kratos, Atreus and others – and even released a first look – the next casting update has arrived. "Lost" actress Sonya Walger has been signed up for the role of the goddess Freya. Amazon has also already shared the character description for Freya:

"Freya is a Vanir goddess and princess who practices powerful, ancient magic. She is also Odin's ex-wife and the former Queen of the Valkyries in Asgard, a title bestowed upon her on her marriage day. She is strong, insightful, and filled with regrets. When Freya's unhappy marriage to Odin ended with her being exiled, she was cut off from her family, as well as her native land, Vanaheim. Freya has lived alone in Midgard for a century, a recluse in a hidden glade, feared by humans, and often referred to as the Witch of the Woods."

Production on the series is currently in full swing. Narratively, Kratos and Atreus naturally take center stage. Together, they embark on a journey to scatter the ashes of Kratos' deceased wife and Atreus' mother, Faye. The first season will reportedly consist of a total of ten episodes, while a second season has already been confirmed. An official release date for season one has not yet been announced, but a premiere in 2027 currently seems realistic.

The God of War cast

Sonya Walger is by no means the first actress to be confirmed for the "God of War" series. Numerous actors have already been announced. The main role of Kratos will be played by "Sons of Anarchy" star Ryan Hurst. His son Atreus will be played by newcomer Callum Vinson. A first image of the two has already been released. It shows them in full costume – Hurst in the iconic Kratos look, Vinson with a bow and arrow. However, this first impression is not only met with enthusiasm in the fan community: reactions online are mixed. And the "God of War" creator himself has expressed his displeasure.

The rest of the Amazon series cast includes Mandy Patinkin as Odin, Ed Skrein as Baldur, Max Parker as Heimdall, Ólafur Darri Ólafsson as Thor, Teresa Palmer as Sif, Alastair Duncan as Mimir, Jeff Gulka as Sindri, Danny Woodburn as Brok, Louis Cunningham as Modi, Ben Chapple as Magni, Evelyn Miller as Gna, and Island Austin as Thrud.

The series is led by showrunner Ronald D. Moore, a true veteran of the television industry. His best-known work includes the reinterpretation of "Battlestar Galactica", which is still considered one of the best sci-fi series ever. He is also known for the series "Outlander", a mix of historical epic and fantasy, which has built up a large fan base worldwide. Moore was also significantly involved in cult formats such as "Star Trek: The Next Generation" and "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine". His experience with epic storytelling, complex characters, and long-form narratives makes him an exciting choice for adapting "God of War."

Sonya Walger

Actress Sonya Walger may already be familiar to many series fans. She celebrated her breakthrough with the mystery series "Lost", in which she played Penny Widmore. The storyline involving Penny and her boyfriend Desmond has remained memorable for many "Lost" fans. The line "Not Penny's Boat" forever ties her to one of the most iconic TV moments of the 2000s. Walger has also appeared in the sci-fi series "For All Mankind" on Apple TV. Here she has already worked with Ronald D. Moore. Walger was also part of the ensemble cast of the short-lived mystery series "FlashForward".

God of War: the video game series

The series is based on the successful "God of War" video game series. The focus is particularly on the 2018 reboot, which reinvented the series and now serves as the foundation for the adaptation. Instead of pure action, the game focused more on storytelling and the relationship between Kratos and his son Atreus. Norse mythology moved to the forefront. The game was not only acclaimed by critics, but also won numerous awards, including "Game of the Year".

With such a strong source material, an experienced showrunner, and a high-profile cast, the "God of War" series has the potential to become a major highlight. Whether it can live up to expectations, however, will only become clear once the first season is released.
