Dwayne Johnson: An Overview of His Most Famous Film Roles
Hardly any Hollywood star has had a career trajectory comparable to Dwayne Johnson's over the past two decades. Having first gained worldwide fame as the wrestling superstar "The Rock", the American has evolved into one of the film industry's most successful actors. With his blend of charisma, humor, and action, he has left his mark on numerous blockbusters. While Johnson was long associated primarily with spectacular action films and family adventures, in 2025 he showcased a completely new side of his acting talent in "The Smashing Machine".
The Breakthrough with The Scorpion King
Dwayne Johnson achieved his first major cinematic success in 2002 with "The Scorpion King". After making a brief appearance in "The Mummy Returns", his character was given his own film. Johnson proved that he could succeed not only as a wrestler but also as a leading actor. The action film grossed over $180 million worldwide and paved his way to Hollywood.
Action Hero in Fast & Furious
Johnson received another career boost when he joined the "Fast & Furious" franchise. Starting with "Fast Five," he portrayed the uncompromising federal agent Luke Hobbs. The character quickly became a fan favorite and brought a breath of fresh air to the successful film series. His popularity was so great that Hobbs later even got his own spin-off alongside Deckard Shaw, played by Jason Statham: "Fast & Furious: Hobbs & Shaw".

Adventures in Jumanji
Johnson also enjoyed great success in family-friendly films. In "Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle" and its sequel, "Jumanji: The Next Level", he played the courageous archaeologist Dr. Smolder Bravestone. He impressed audiences not only with his action sequences but, above all, with his comedic timing. The films became massive box-office hits worldwide and remain among his most popular works to this day.

Disney Hero in Moana
One of Johnson's best-known roles wasn't performed in front of the camera, but in the recording studio. In the Disney animated film "Moana", he lent his voice to the demigod Maui. With songs like "You're Welcome", the character quickly became a fan favorite. The role showcased another facet of the actor and made him even more popular with younger audiences. This year also saw the release of the live-action adaptation, in which Johnson once again stars as Maui.

Jungle Adventure with Emily Blunt
In 2021, Johnson starred alongside Emily Blunt in "Jungle Cruise". The adventure film, based on the Disney attraction of the same name, combines action, fantasy, and humor. The chemistry between the two leads was particularly praised by many viewers and later led to another collaboration.

Superhero in "Black Adam"
With "Black Adam", Johnson fulfilled a long-held dream. For many years, he had been trying to bring the comic book character to the big screen. In 2022, the time had finally come: as a powerful antihero, Black Adam was set to expand the DC Universe. Although the film performed solidly at the box office, long-term plans for the character failed to materialize following the DC Universe's reboot.

A Bold Role Change: *The Smashing Machine*
After years as an action star, Dwayne Johnson surprised audiences in 2025 with "The Smashing Machine", a biopic about former MMA and UFC champion Mark Kerr. Directed by Benny Safdie, Johnson portrays the exceptional athlete whose career was marked by sporting successes, but also by painkiller addiction and personal crises. Emily Blunt takes on the role of Kerr's partner, Dawn Staples.
For the role, Johnson underwent an extensive physical and visual transformation. Using prosthetics, a mask, and a significantly more restrained performance, he deliberately distanced himself from his usual image as an invincible action hero. Instead of spectacular explosions and wisecracks, the focus here is on the emotional story of a man who threatens to be torn apart between athletic glory and his personal demons. Many critics regarded "The Smashing Machine" as a turning point in Johnson's career. You can find our review of "The Smashing Machine" here.
