A star-studded AI thriller was recently wrapped
Miles Teller and Eddie Redmayne could soon be appearing on screen together! According to Variety, both actors are currently in talks to play the lead roles in Doug Liman's upcoming spy thriller "Star One".
The screenplay for "Star One" was written by David Coggeshall, who previously worked on "The Family Plan" and "Orphan: First Kill". The story centers on two completely opposite CIA agents who must transport weapons through enemy territory and survive a journey spanning thousands of kilometers. The film is based on a previously unknown true story surrounding one of the most significant covert missions in modern history.
It is not yet known when the film will be released in theaters. Just recently, "Edge of Tomorrow" director Liman wrapped up filming on the AI thriller "Bitcoin" starring Casey Affleck and Pete Davidson.
Doug Liman: The Director Between Action, Chaos, and Cult Status
For more than two decades, Doug Liman has been one of the most influential directors in modern action cinema. Unlike many Hollywood filmmakers, Liman did not start his career directly with big studio films, but worked his way up through independent productions. It is precisely this indie spirit that continues to shape his films today: fast-paced direction, spontaneous ideas, and characters who often oscillate between chaos and control.
Liman developed an interest in film and storytelling at an early age. His knack for pace and dynamism quickly made him a standout name in the independent film scene of the 1990s. Even his earliest films demonstrated his penchant for breaking with traditional narrative conventions and his preference for presenting characters as raw and authentic rather than polished and perfect.
Swingers: The Cult Film of a Generation
Liman celebrated his breakthrough in 1996 with "Swingers". The low-budget production surprisingly quickly became a cult film. Written by and starring Jon Favreau, the film tells the story of young men in Los Angeles who are trying to find their place in life amid parties, relationships, and a sense of disorientation.
In particular, the laid-back dialogue and realistic portrayal of young urban life struck a chord with the times. At the same time, "Swingers" brought actors like Vince Vaughn to prominence. The film is now considered one of the most important independent films of the 1990s.
Fast cuts and dark humor in "Go"
With "Go", Doug Liman proved he was capable of more than just dialogue-driven comedies. The film tells several interconnected stories and combines crime, humor, and action into an energetic whole. "Go" was often compared to early films by Quentin Tarantino. Yet Liman was already developing his own style: fast camera movements, frantic cuts, and characters who constantly maneuver themselves into uncontrollable situations. The film became a cult favorite, especially among young audiences.
The Bourne Identity Transforms Action Cinema
Liman finally achieved his international breakthrough with "The Bourne Identity", Together with Matt Damon, he created a spy thriller that had a lasting impact on the genre. The story centers on CIA agent Jason Bourne, who has lost his memory and is being pursued by assassins. Instead of relying on over-the-top special effects, Liman focused on realistic fights, intense car chases, and a documentary-style camera approach. It was precisely this raw direction that made the film so special.
"The Bourne Identity" was a massive success and later even influenced the aesthetic of the James Bond series. Many modern action films still draw inspiration from the style of this film.
Glamour and Explosions in Mr. & Mrs. Smith
In 2005, "Mr. & Mrs. Smith" followed as one of Doug Liman's biggest box office hits. The film, starring Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, tells the story of a married couple who discover that they both secretly work as professional assassins. Liman combined explosive action with romantic comedy, creating an extremely entertaining blockbuster. At the same time, the film became a global media sensation due to the subsequent relationship between Pitt and Jolie.
Despite all the star power, "Mr. & Mrs. Smith" stands out above all for its pace and the playful chemistry between the main characters. To this day, the film remains one of the most popular action comedies of the 2000s.
Political Tension in "Fair Game"
Doug Liman has, however, proven on multiple occasions that he is interested in more than just entertainment. With "Fair Game", he tackled a serious political issue. The film is based on the true story of CIA agent Valerie Plame and the controversies surrounding the Iraq War. Naomi Watts and Sean Penn play a married couple who come under enormous pressure due to political power struggles. The film screened in competition at the Cannes Film Festival and showcased a significantly more serious side of the director.
Science Fiction Masterpiece "Edge of Tomorrow"
Liman reached another career high in 2014 with "Edge of Tomorrow". The film, starring Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt, combines science fiction, action, and humor in an extraordinary way. The story follows a soldier who relives the same day of battle over and over again, gradually becoming the perfect fighter. The clever time-loop concept, combined with spectacular action sequences, made the film a modern science fiction classic.
Emily Blunt, in particular, was celebrated for her role as an uncompromising elite fighter. Many critics consider "Edge of Tomorrow" one of the most intelligent blockbusters of recent years.
American Made: Smuggler Between the CIA and Cartels
In 2017, Doug Liman teamed up with Tom Cruise once again to direct "American Made". The film is loosely based on the true story of pilot Barry Seal, who worked for the CIA while simultaneously becoming a drug smuggler for the Medellín Cartel. Liman directed the story as a fast-paced mix of thriller, satire, and crime film. Tom Cruise, in particular, delivered a compelling performance as the main character, portraying him as both charming and ruthless.
"American Made" once again demonstrates Liman's interest in stories about intelligence agencies, power structures, and moral gray areas. At the same time, the film showcases his flair for dark humor and fast-paced storytelling.

Tension in a confined space in The Wall
With "The Wall", Doug Liman struck a much quieter note that same year. The intense thriller tells the story of two American soldiers in the Iraq War who are attacked by an invisible sniper and must seek shelter behind a wall.
The film focuses almost entirely on psychological tension and largely dispenses with big explosions or spectacular action scenes. Instead, Liman relies on a claustrophobic atmosphere and mental strain. The minimalist staging, in particular, demonstrates just how versatile the director can be. Although "The Wall" was produced on a much smaller scale than his big blockbusters, many critics consider it one of his most underrated works.
Chaos as a Creative Method
Doug Liman is also known in Hollywood for his unconventional working style. Many of his productions are considered chaotic behind the scenes. Scripts are changed on the fly, scenes are improvised, and studios regularly lose patience with the director. Yet it is precisely this creative chaos that seems to be part of his success. Liman consciously tries to infuse his films with energy and spontaneity. As a result, his works often feel more alive and unpredictable than classic studio productions.
Why Doug Liman Has Shaped Action Cinema
Doug Liman has permanently changed modern action cinema. His films combine realism with suspense, humor with danger, and big-budget action with emotional characters. In doing so, he consistently manages to strike a balance between an independent spirit and Hollywood blockbusters.
Whether with spy thrillers like "The Bourne Identity", action-packed comedies like "Mr. & Mrs. Smith", intelligent science fiction films like "Edge of Tomorrow", or suspense-filled works like "American Made" and "The Wall" – Liman remains a director who takes risks and reinterprets genres. That is precisely why his films remain among Hollywood's most exciting productions to this day.
