The Batman 2 first look: Director Matt Reeves reveals first stills from production
In the sequel, Robert Pattinson, aka Bruce Wayne, will have to bundle up
"The Batman 2" is eagerly anticipated. No wonder: after all, it's been over four years since the first film, starring Robert Pattinson as Bruce Wayne, hit theaters. But now we have a little sneak peek at the sequel. It's just a teaser, but it's something! Director Matt Reeves has unveiled the first images from the production on social media.
Under the hashtag Snow Tires, he posted two photos, each showing the Batmobile. Not much else is visible in the images – but in keeping with the hashtag, it appears to be snowing. For Variety, one thing is certain: The sequel is set in winter, as the industry publication notes in reference to the social media post. In any case, the images of the Batmobile are going over well. Matt Reeves' post has already garnered 6.2 million views. It has also been liked over 175,000 times. Not bad for two images that reveal almost nothing about the film beyond the presumed season. But it underscores all the more clearly just how eagerly fans are awaiting "The Batman: Part II."
Winter in The Batman 2: Possibly a nod to Burton's Batman Returns
Although in this case, the season could also be a homage to another "Batman" sequel. "The Batman 2" is set to hit theaters in 2027 – 35 years after "Batman Returns." With that film, director Tim Burton followed up on his first "Batman" adaptation from 1989. Back then, Bruce Wayne, aka Batman, was portrayed by Michael Keaton. At his side were Michelle Pfeiffer as Selina Kyle, aka Catwoman, and Danny DeVito as Oswald Cobblepot, aka the Penguin. And: This sequel was also set in winter, more specifically around Christmas time. That may just be a coincidence, but it could also be intended as a small nod to Burton's classic.
It remains to be seen whether there will be any more parallels to "Batman Returns." What is certain, however, is that director Matt Reeves will also direct "The Batman 2" following the first installment. Together with Mattson Tomlin, he also wrote the screenplay for the sequel. Reeves told Variety several months ago:
"It's been a long journey, but I am so incredibly excited. I'm really proud of the script me and Mattson did."
It has indeed been a long journey. The sequel to "The Batman" was announced as early as 2022. However, production was repeatedly delayed. Last June, the moment finally arrived: the screenplay by Matt Reeves and Mattson Tomlin was finished. Expectations are high – including from a financial standpoint. After all, the first film grossed $772 million at the global box office. It will be interesting to see if "The Batman: Part II" will be similarly successful.
Robert Pattinson returns once again as Bruce Wayne, aka Batman
In any case, Robert Pattinson will once again don the costume of the titular superhero as Bruce Wayne. Jeffrey Wright returns as Jim Gordon. Colin Farrell is back as the Penguin. It was recently announced that Andy Serkis is once again on board as Alfred Pennyworth. In addition, Scarlett Johansson is set to star this time around as Harvey Dent's wife, Gilda Dent. Sebastian Stan is slated to play Harvey. In the comics, Harvey Dent becomes one of the most famous supervillains in the Batman universe: Two-Face. An actor for the role of his violent father has apparently already been chosen: "Game of Thrones" actor Charles Dance is in talks for the part.
So it's already clear: "The Batman 2" boasts an impressive ensemble cast that's certainly something to look forward to. But we'll have to wait a while longer before we can see these stars alongside the Dark Knight on the big screen. "The Batman 2" is set to hit theaters on October 1, 2027.
