Heat 2: Potential successor to Robert De Niro – new star confirmed
In the sequel directed by Michael Mann, Stephen Graham takes on a role
A new actor for "Heat 2": Stephen Graham has been cast in the sequel to Michael Mann's classic thriller. The role the "Adolescence" star will play has not yet been announced. However, it is speculated that he could be Robert De Niro's successor, as reported by Variety.
In the original 1995 film, De Niro played the gangster Neil McCauley. "Heat" centered on the thrilling cat-and-mouse game between McCauley and police officer Vincent Hanna, portrayed by Al Pacino. If Stephen Graham were indeed to step into the role of the gangster McCauley, he would have big shoes to fill. For one thing, De Niro is already a legend in the film industry, and for another, his performance in "Heat" ranks among the highlights of his impressive career. One unforgettable scene from "Heat" is when De Niro and Pacino sit face-to-face for the first time. Their two characters, Hanna and McCauley, meet on equal footing in that moment, speaking calmly to one another – in a film where bullets often do the talking. Two men on opposite sides of the law, two sides of the same coin.
Stephen Graham caused a stir with Adolescence
With Graham, the production has signed an actor who has been making a name for himself lately. This is primarily due to his role in "Adolescence". In the Netflix miniseries, he played the father of a boy suspected of committing murder. "Adolescence" sparked a lot of conversation and swept the 2025 Emmys, where the production won awards including Best Miniseries. Most recently, he appeared in the "Peaky Blinders" film "The Immortal Man." He's currently making waves at the Venice International Film Festival with "Bunker." In this thriller, he stars alongside the two acclaimed stars Penélope Cruz and Javier Bardem.
He's also likely to be in excellent company in "Heat 2." Although confirmation is still pending, it has previously been reported that Leonardo DiCaprio and Christian Bale, among others, are set to star in the sequel. Bale is set to take over the role of Vincent Hanna from Al Pacino. DiCaprio is set to portray Chris Shiherlis, a character previously played by Val Kilmer.
Heat 2 is not just a sequel
Adam Driver, Jason Clarke, and María Cid are also in the running. There is speculation that Driver, known for "Star Wars" and "Marriage Story," is being considered for the role of the villain. Furthermore, it was recently reported that Odessa Young is said to be the top choice for the role of Charlene Shiherlis. In the first "Heat" film, Charlene was the wife of gangster Chris Shiherlis. At the time, she was played by Ashley Judd.
For "Heat 2," Michael Mann will once again serve as director and screenwriter, just as he did for the first film. The new movie is based on the 2022 novel of the same name, which Mann co-wrote with Meg Gardiner. "Heat 2" is set to be a mix of prequel and sequel. In other words, the events will take place partly before and partly after the events of the first film. It remains to be seen whether the sequel can live up to the first film. With the original, Mann created a classic that grossed $187 million at the global box office and is still enthusiastically celebrated by fans and critics alike today.
