Only Murders in the Building Season 6: More and more Doctor Who stars are joining the cast
Now Peter Capaldi is also on board – and he's in good company
The sixth season of "Only Murders in the Building" could be a treat for fans of the science fiction series "Doctor Who." Now, with Peter Capaldi, another former "Doctor Who" actor is joining the hit crime comedy, as reported by Deadline.
It was previously announced that Jodie Whittaker and David Tennant would also be appearing as guest stars in the new episodes of "Only Murders in the Building" – two actors who have also previously portrayed the Doctor. The cast also includes Jim Broadbent, an actor who portrayed an alternate version of the Doctor in a 1999 TV comedy special.
Doctor Who: A sci-fi hero with cult status
"Doctor Who" has been around since 1963. Especially in its British homeland, the sci-fi series enjoys enormous cult status and is an integral part of pop culture. The title character is a mysterious time traveler. If he is mortally wounded, he can regenerate and thus escape death – though in doing so, he takes on a different form. For this long-running franchise, this has the practical advantage that every change in the lead actor can be justified within the storyline. Accordingly, the Doctor has been portrayed over the years by numerous actors, including Whittaker, Tennant, and Capaldi.
It remains to be seen what roles Capaldi and company will play in "Only Murders in the Building." The fact that several actors from a British hit like "Doctor Who" are appearing in the sixth season, of all times, likely has to do with the setting of the new episodes. While "Only Murders in the Building" is usually set in New York, the new season is set in London for a change. In addition to the former "Doctor Who" stars, the following actors are on board as guest stars, according to Deadline: Nicola Coughlan, Richard Ayoade, Adrian Lukis, Kathryn Hunter, Jennifer Saunders, Sean Teale, Simone Ashley, Amar Chadha-Patel, Rhea Norwood, Matthew Beard, Sharon Horgan, Martin Freeman, Geri Halliwell-Horner, Jamie Demetriou, Anjana Vasan, Jane Horrocks, Derek Jacobi, and Lesley Nicol.
Only Murders in the Building: A mix of crime and comedy
"Only Murders in the Building" has been airing since 2021. Each season centers on a different murder case solved by amateur detectives Charles-Haden Savage (played by Steve Martin) , Oliver Putnam (Martin Short) , and Mabel Mora (Selena Gomez). In addition to the crime element, the Hulu series thrives above all on its humor and the chemistry between the three protagonists, who all live in the same building and share a fascination with mysterious criminal cases. Furthermore, "Only Murders in the Building" consistently features a star-studded supporting cast. Among the most prominent guests to appear so far are Paul Rudd, Meryl Streep, Zach Galifianakis, Eugene Levy, Eva Longoria, Logan Lerman, Christoph Waltz, and Renée Zellweger.
In addition to audiences, "Only Murders in the Building" has also been well-received by critics. The series has been a regular contender at the Emmy Awards from the very beginning and has already received a total of 61 nominations and seven awards. And this year, the crime hit is once again in the running for the Emmys, this time with five nominations. Among other things, "Only Murders in the Building" is in the running for the award for Outstanding Comedy Series. In addition, Martin Short could be honored as Outstanding Lead Actor.
