The "Ocean's Eleven" prequel is continuing to take shape! Two Hollywood stars have already been cast in the lead roles: Margot Robbie and Bradley Cooper. According to media reports, the two could be joined by Wagner Moura. The Hollywood Reporter has learned, that the "Narcos" star is being eyed to play the film's antagonist. However, Moura is currently still in negotiations – so the casting isn't 100% confirmed yet.

Here's what the Ocean's prequel is about

The first plot details about the prequel have already been revealed. The film is set in the 60s. Margot Robbie spoke about the basic premise at CinemaCon 2026:

"Before Danny Ocean ever stepped foot in Vegas, two masterminds taught him everything he knows – his parents. You'll see them in their prime, and in our new movie, pulling off an epic heist at the 1962 Monaco Grand Prix."

In Steven Soderbergh's "Ocean's" trilogy, Danny Ocean was played by superstar George Clooney. Now, Robbie and Bradley Cooper are set to take on the roles of his parents. Cooper, however, won't just be part of the cast: The actor will also direct the film and apparently has written the current script. According to reports, "Minari" director Lee Isaac Chung was initially slated to direct. Although the "Ocean's" prequel doesn't have an official title yet, a release date has already been announced: We'll get to see the new heist thriller in theaters on June 25, 2027.

Wagner Moura

If the deal goes through, Wagner Moura would add another prestigious Hollywood production to his filmography. The Brazilian actor gained international fame primarily through the Netflix series "Narcos," in which he portrayed the notorious drug lord Pablo Escobar. The role introduced him to millions of viewers worldwide and earned him widespread praise for his performance.

In addition, Moura appeared in the science-fiction film "Elysium" alongside Matt Damon, among other projects. He also had a role in Alex Garland's "Civil War." Most recently, he was even nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actor for the thriller "The Secret Agent"!

Moura's next project is "The Last House." In this horror thriller, a family of four suddenly finds itself trapped in their home and must work together to find a way out. Alongside Moura, "Past Lives" star Greta Lee plays the lead role. The film premieres on Netflix on August 7. You can watch the new trailer for "The Last House" here.

Ocean's 14: A sequel to the film series is also on the way!

But it's not just a prequel that's planned for the revival of the "Ocean's" franchise: a sequel is also in development! The original stars of the Soderbergh films are set to return – including George Clooney, Julia Roberts, Brad Pitt, Matt Damon, and Don Cheadle. In an interview with Variety, Clooney already hinted that while the characters have gotten a bit older, they still have what it takes for the next heist:

"We're too old to do what we used to do, but we're still smart enough to know how to get away with something."

"Deadpool 2" director David Leitch is being considered for the director's chair. Most recently, reports indicated that filming could begin in October 2026. However, a theatrical release date has not yet been made public.

The Ocean's Film Series

The "Ocean's" franchise is undoubtedly one of Hollywood's best-known heist series. The modern film series began in 2001 with Steven Soderbergh's "Ocean's Eleven." The remake of the 1960 classic of the same name stood out for its star-studded cast and became a major box office hit.

This success led to two direct sequels: "Ocean's Twelve" was released in 2004 and sent Danny Ocean's team to Europe, while "Ocean's Thirteen" reunited the original crew in 2007 for another heist in Las Vegas. After a long hiatus, a spin-off titled "Ocean's 8" followed in 2018, continuing the story of Debbie Ocean, Danny Ocean's sister. The film starred Sandra Bullock, Cate Blanchett, Anne Hathaway, Rihanna, and Helena Bonham Carter.

With the now-planned prequel and the simultaneously developed "Ocean's 14," Warner Bros. appears to be shifting its focus back to the franchise. The series is thus poised for a major expansion – it will be interesting to see how the two films are received by audiences.
