The "Minecraft Movie" sequel has finally cast a central character! After the huge success of the first film, it quickly became clear: "A Minecraft Movie 2" is coming! Now the industry portal Deadline reports that "Spider-Man" star Kirsten Dunst has been cast. She will take on a character known from the game.

Kirsten Dunst as Alex

We are talking about the character Alex. In the "Minecraft" game, Alex is one of the playable characters, just like Steve. Her appearance in the second film was already hinted at in a post-credit scene from the first part. There, Steve is seen returning to his old house at the end. He meets a character who introduces herself as Alex. However, the audience only got to see her from behind – her face remains hidden. Director Jared Hess has already emphasized the importance of Alex for part 2.

"The character we teased is Alex, the other massively critical character in 'Minecraft'. It's Steve (Black) and Alex, and so that's the one that we will be bringing to the table without a doubt."

In the first "Minecraft" film, Alex was played by Alice May Connolly but voiced by Kate McKinnon. These many clues already indicated that a new actress would be found for Alex in the sequel. With Kirsten Dunst, the filmmakers have now found an actress who has appeared in numerous Hollywood productions and is especially well known as Mary Jane Watson in the "Spider-Man" films.

Cast of A Minecraft Movie 2

In addition to Dunst, several familiar faces from the first film are expected to return. According to Deadline, returning cast members include Jason Momoa, Jack Black, Danielle Brooks, Matt Berry and Jennifer Coolidge. However, other actors from the first film can also be expected to return.

When will A Minecraft Movie 2 be released?

The start date for "A Minecraft Movie 2" has already been set – but a little patience is still required. The film is scheduled to be released in cinemas on July 23, 2027. You can find out all the other details – and the first clues about the plot – in our compact movie preview.

Kirsten Dunst and her best-known films

Dunst celebrated her international breakthrough early on with "Interview with a Vampire" and "Jumanji", before achieving worldwide fame as Mary Jane Watson in the "Spider-Man" trilogy alongside Tobey Maguire. She has also frequently collaborated with director Sofia Coppola. She received critical acclaim for her role in "Melancholia" by Lars von Trier, among others. Dunst has also impressed in television, for example with her performance in the tv show "Fargo". Most recently, she was part of the cast of Alex Garland's "Civil War".

The success of the first Minecraft film

The first "Minecraft movie" from 2025 was by no means a simple adaptation of a game. The attempt to turn a game without a fixed plot into a feature film was long considered difficult. But the results at the box office exceeded even the wildest expectations. "A Minecraft Movie" was one of the most commercially successful films of the year worldwide.

What could Minecraft 2 be about?

There are no detailed plot points yet, leaving plenty of possibilities. According to Jared Hess, he and his team had many ideas that didn't make it into the first film. However, the first poster could give an initial indication of the direction it could take. It shows two pickaxes – but "Minecraft" fans should take a closer look here! A slight purple shimmer can be seen on the poster. This, of course, immediately reminds us of the end of the game. It is one of the three dimensions in "Minecraft" – and the home of the legendary Ender Dragon! Could the sequel's main villain be the Ender Dragon? It certainly seems possible.

The Minecraft phenomenon

"Minecraft" is one of the most successful and influential video games of our time. Since its release, the sandbox game has delighted millions of players worldwide by offering them almost unlimited creative freedom. Whether building complex worlds, fighting for survival against monsters or playing together with others – "Minecraft" combines simple game mechanics with enormous creative depth. The pixel-like aesthetic, which has long since become a trademark, is particularly influential.

The "Minecraft" phenomenon extends far beyond the game – and the "Minecraft" world was significantly expanded once again with the film adaptation. The film translated the open, creative game world into a narrative structure, making it accessible to an audience that had previously had little contact with the game. Younger viewers and families in particular were able to find new access to the brand. At the same time, the film revived the interest of existing fans and helped Minecraft to further expand its cultural relevance.
