Good news for all "Baldur's Gate" fans! As Deadline magazine reports, HBO is working on a series of the game series of the same name. The creative director is Craig Mazin, who was also responsible for "The Last of Us".

In terms of content, the series will follow on from the end of "Baldur's Gate 3" and will be strongly based on the world, characters and narrative structure of the game by Larian Studios. However, the earlier games are not completely ignored. There are numerous content and thematic connections between the individual parts of the series, which are closely linked to the "Dungeons & Dragons" lore. Mazin wants to pick up on these common elements.

New characters will be introduced and familiar figures from the game will also find their way onto the screen. Fans can therefore hope that popular companions such as Shadowheart or Astarion, two of the most influential characters from the game, will become part of the series storyline.

There is currently no official information on the cast. Neither the main nor supporting roles have been cast yet, which indicates that the project is still at an early stage of development.

Fantasy series that should delight fans of Baldur's Gate

With "Baldur's Gate 3", the classic fantasy role-playing game has celebrated a modern comeback. Epic quests, morally complex decisions, a dark world full of magic and intrigue as well as unforgettable companions are what make the game so appealing. If you still haven't had enough of this genre after the credits or the final score, there are numerous fantasy productions in the series sector that pick up on similar themes, moods and narrative styles. These series should particularly appeal to fans of "Baldur's Gate".

The Witcher: Moral gray areas and dark fantasy

"The Witcher" on Netflix is one of the most obvious recommendations. The series tells the story of Geralt of Riva, a monster hunter who has to assert himself in a brutal, politically torn world. As in "Baldur's Gate", good and evil can rarely be clearly separated. Decisions have consequences, alliances are fragile and many characters operate in morally gray areas. Fans of complex companions such as Astarion or Shadowheart will particularly enjoy the ambivalent characters in the series.

House of the Dragon: power games in a fantasy guise

Anyone who enjoys getting entangled in intrigue in "Baldur's Gate" should not miss "House of the Dragon". The "Game of Thrones" prequel focuses less on classic adventures and more on political power struggles, family conflicts and tragic decisions. Similar to the role-playing game, personal motives, loyalties and betrayal are at the heart of the plot. The series offers dark fantasy without clear heroes – an approach that fits in well with the more serious tone of "Baldur's Gate 3".

The Rings of Power: Epic world and ancient powers

With "The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power", Amazon Prime brings one of the most famous fantasy worlds to the screen. Even if the tone is more epic and less gloomy, the series is reminiscent of classic pen & paper adventures in its structure. Ancient powers awaken, different races pursue their own interests and the fate of the world hangs on individual decisions. Fans who appreciate the feeling of a lively, detailed fantasy world in "Baldur's Gate" will find what they are looking for here.

Shadow and Bone: magic, intrigue and outsiders

"Shadow and Bone" combines magic, political tensions and personal destinies to create a dense fantasy narrative. The series scores with a diverse group of characters, each pursuing their own goals – similar to a role-playing group. The dynamics between the characters and the mixture of adventure and intrigue are particularly reminiscent of classic RPG experiences. The magic system with clear rules should also appeal to fans of "Baldur's Gate".

The Wheel of Time: fate, magic and great prophecies

"The Wheel of Time" focuses more on classic high fantasy: prophecies, reborn heroes and a world in balance between light and darkness. Nevertheless, the series offers many parallels to "Baldur's Gate", particularly through its ensemble structure. Different characters develop along their own paths, while moral decisions and abuse of power remain central themes. For players who like epic campaigns and long narrative arcs, this series is a suitable choice.

Castlevania: dark, mature and surprisingly profound

The animated Netflix series "Castlevania" is clearly aimed at an adult audience. Despite vampires and demons, the focus is on character development. Many characters struggle with guilt, loss and inner conflicts – motifs that also characterize "Baldur's Gate 3". The series proves that fantasy can not only be epic, but also philosophical and emotional.

Legend of Vox Machina: pure pen & paper feeling

Anyone who particularly appreciates the role-playing feeling of "Baldur's Gate" should try "The Legend of Vox Machina". The animated series is based on a real "Dungeons & Dragons" campaign and perfectly captures the feeling of a chaotic but lovable group of adventurers. Humor, brutality, emotional depth and epic battles go hand in hand here – just like in many game moments of "Baldur's Gate".

Fantasy series as a natural extension of the role-playing experience

Fantasy series offer fans of "Baldur's Gate" the opportunity to experience familiar themes in a new medium. Whether dark moral issues, epic worlds or multi-layered characters – the best series pick up on precisely those elements that make role-playing games so special. For anyone who wants to delve even deeper into fantastic worlds after playing the game, these series are the perfect next step.
